Sydney, March 13, The Rev. Mr Walters, at the Me thodists’ Conference, in a motion a the conference, records Ids grave am emphatic disapproval of the compulson clauses of the Defence Act, as assault ing the foundation of character, violat ing the personal liberty, invading tin sphere of parental rights and respon sibilities, and inflicting serious injury on the national life and character. The voting on the motion was 4‘ each, and the president gave his cast ing vote against the motion. CLAIM AND COUNTER-CLAIM FOR LIBEL. (Received 10.0 a.m.) Melbourne, March 13. Benjamin Hoare and John Norton have each issued a writ against tin other, claiming £SOOO damages for li bel. ONE OF THE “HAS-BEENS.”
Sydney, March 12. Advices have been received that the British steamer Canterbury, from Vladivostock to Colombo, with a cargo of 6500 tons of beans, struck a reef at Ogawn Island, off Japan, and sank in thirty fathoms. A Japanese cruiser rescued the crew. WRECK OF A SCHOONER. Adelaide, March 13. The schooner Black Albatross, with a cargo of superphosphates, struck the Eclipse Reef. The captain and crew were rescued with difficulty.
