WHANGAMOMONA NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Times have been lively about he during the past week or so, socials, picnics, tennis matches, etc., following close one on another. Last week the friends of Mr and Mrs Calgher and family gave a farewell social, and it was one of the best from all points of view ever held here. A long programme of dances was gone through, interspersed with songs from Messrs. C. Reader and H. Twiss, and recitations from Messrs Aylward and Mills.. During the supper interval, Mr S. Bishara apologised for the presentation not having arrived from Auckland, and cm behalf of the Whangamomona people formally presented the Calgher family with a silver tea and coffee service and silver tray. Mr 1). Hatton, on behalf of Mrs Calgher, returned thanks for the Ciandsome gift. Yesterday the To Wera and Whanga Tennis Clubs tried conclusions on the local courts, and wore defeated by about 40 games. The visitors were entertained at luncheon and tea by the local lady members, and afterwards a dance was held in the Town Hall.

A meeting of all interested in the Public Organ is to be held to-night, in'order to make the organ more widely known and generally extend its sphere of usefulness. Mr P. M. Long has secured from Auckland a useful Library of books, and these will bo circulated for winter reading among the Sunday School scholars. When finished, the Library will be returned to Auckland and exchanged for another set of books. The scheme is to be commended, for it will doubtless cultivate a taste among the young folks for good reading. The contractors for the Domain contract are making good progress, and should be finished well within the contract time. Afterwards the Domain Hoard intends sowing the ground down in grass, with a good top dressing of manure.
