DEMOCRATIC AUSTRALIA.
GOVERXOR’S FAREWELL. (Received 10.25 a.m.) Sydney, March 4. There was a large and demonstrative gathering of citizens at the farewell banquet to Governor Chelmsford in the Town Hall, the Lord Mayor presiding. Premier McGowen, Mr Wade, Leader of the Opposition, and the Mayor paid tributes to the departing Governor’s work and popularity, and expressed regret that In l was unable to complete his term of office. Lord Chelmsford, in reply, touching on the question of democracy, doubted whether there was any dominion under the British flag wherein personal liberty was accepted in so unqualified a degree as in Australia.
