BOXING TOURNAMENT.

MAXWELL V. PORTER. The Eltham Sports and Pastimes Club are holding their biggest venture, so far, on 'March 6tty°&b' which Maxwell and Porter, both front rank light-weights, have been hrlatcled for a purse of £SO aud expenses.' Besides the star attraction, it is understood from the secretary there will bo five preliminary bouts between the best amateurs in Taranaki and one or two other bouts as a stand-by in case of an early finish in the big event. There has been a certain amount of criticism over the price to be charged, but it may be mentioned that the same price is being asked as in Palmerston a week or so ago on the occasion of the Maxwell-Heg-garty fight, whore, taking £l-10 11s at the doors, after paying all expenses in connection with the tournament, only £9 11s was netted. Those not behind the scenes have but a faint idea of what it costs to run a tournament. However, no expense is being spared on this occasion to make the event worthy of the pushful Eltham Club. Mr Greville, one of Auckland’s best referees, has been engaged to officiate, expensive trophies are being offered, and an absolutely clean, fair, and enjoyable evening’s sport is assured. Several Hawera people are talking of running a special train which would cost about £ll ss, but nothing has been definitely decided yet. Anyway, we think it is up to all lovers of clean sport to do what they can to help the Eltham Club along. Eighteen months ago it was non-existent, and now, owing to the energetic committee and an enthusiastic body of active members, it has been raised to the position of a frontrank club. The one flaw in the marble will be the absence of Professor Stagpoole’s guiding hand, and though they have got a big hurdle to get over, in the words of the secretary “we mean to do it or bust.” i
