MAINTENANCE.
A circus performer named Arthur Ireland, alias Arthur Thurston, who was arrested at Masterton was brought before the Nelson Magistrate’s Court on Saturday on a charge of leaving the district without making provision for an unborn illegitimate child of which he was the alleged father. Accused, who pleaded guilty, said he was willing to marry the girl, but the mother objected. Sergeant Kelly stated defendant visited Nelson last year as a member of Ridgway’s circus, and lived with the girl— : wlio was fifteen years of age—at Glenliop for a short time, the couple passing as man and wife. The Magistrate adjujdged defendant to be the putative’ father and ordered him to find security for £75 ’for any maintenance oMei J lhat might iJe made.
