FIRES.
OUTBREAK ON THE MATA lUA. (Per Press Association.) Timaru, Eebraary 2b The lire was got under before noon. The hatches were taken off and the captain of the steamer •nd two firemen went into the hoid. Soon after the air got into the hold and bales of flax burst into flames, but water was poured on them and the smoking bales were hoisted to the wharf, where the water was also poured on them. By the united efforts of water, chemicals, and steam, the lire was got under control and a serious conflagration was averted. As the flax was shipped at Auckland, nothing is known hero of the insurances or the shippers. The damage is estimated at £BOOO to £lO,000. The vessel herself is thought to have suffered little damage. A general average is to be struck and possibly the flax will be auctioned here. The work of unloading No. 5 hold is proceeding. WELLINGTON’S OUTBREAK. Wellington, February 2G. Fire partially destroyed a nineroomed house in Hill street owned by A. Hall and occupied by W. Simm (manager of the 0.T.C.). The bouse was insured for £950 and the furniture for £750 in the National Insurance Office.
