FARMERS’ UNION.
TOKO BRANCH. A meeting of the Toko Branch of the Union was held on Monday night, when there was a good attendance and much enthusiasm. A letter from the Dominion Secretary was read, asking the Branch to draw up a list of farmers who would require labor within the next two or three months and forward information to tae head office, to be placed before the. Government. Mr Marfell moved, seconded by Mr Davis and carried, that the secretary bo instructed to reply that in the opinion of this Branch of the Farmers’ Union, Stratford district could absorb fully 300 men and boys.
The time of entry in connection with the root-growing competitions has been extended till Bth March.
It was reported to the meeting that the merchants of Toko, Messrs. Geo. Morrison, R. Morrison, J. Bain, A. Ferguson, J. A. Stanford and Beloe and Griffiths had decided to give £1 each to purchase a cup, to be presented to the Union for the best pen of five heifer calves of any breed, suitable for dairy purposes, every exhibitor to he a bona fide member, and the cup to bo won twice in succession or three times at intervals before becoming the property of an exhibitor, the calves to be bred by the exhibitor. Mr Marfell moved, seconded by MiGem hoefer and carried, that the offer of the Toko merchants be accepted with thanks.
It was decided to hold this competition oa the day of the sports, the Sports Committee to provide accommodation.
The next meeting will bo held on 17th March.
