BEET SUGAR PRODUCTION. (Received 10.15 a.m.) London, February 24. Professor Licht estimates that the production of beet sugar has increased by 2,438,000 tons, as the total this season will show an increase of 2,170,000 tons; arrivals 420,000, forwarded 270,000, available 155,000. Newton King’s Weekly Report, On Friday, 14th instant, at my Waiwakaiho yards I had a fair entry and cleared most of the yarding at the following rates: Mixed weaners £1 3s 6d for small up to £1 14s Od for good grade. Jersey-Holstein weaners were in good demand, all selling at from £2 13s 6d to £2 17s 6d, empty 15-month heifers £3 4s 6d to £3 Bs, bulls £3 to £5 10s, aged cows £1 6s to £1 Pis, store cows £2 14s to £3 18s 6d, forward and’fat cows £4 11s 6d to £5 11s. Very choice springing Jersey heifers £ll to £ll 10s, grade springers £5 5s to £6 ss, 18-month steers £3 10s 6d. " At Toko yards on Monday 17 ray pens were all well filled with all classes of stock. Buyers were present in good numbers, a very satisfactory clearance being made as follows: Mixed weaners £1 9s to £1 11s 6d, weaner Jersey heifers up to £2 3s, aged cow's £1 15s to £2 10s, store cows £2 lla 6d to £3 17s 6d, forward and fat Cows £4 4s to £5 18s, bulls £2 14s to £8 6s, 20-month steers £3 19s, 21year in-calf heifers £4 7s Gel, empty 15-month heifers £3 ss, aged ewee 5s 4d, f.m. ewes 9s 7d to 10s 6d, lambs 6s 9d, weaner pigs 8s to 9s, small stores £1 3s to £1 6s.
On the same day at my annual Waiwakaiho fair there was an entry of 4500 sheep. Competition was good for all classes except 2-tooth sheep and rams. A small line of well grown woolly lambs, forward, obtained spirited competition, being sold at the hammer at 13s Id, good woolly lambs realised 10s 4d to 11s 4d, shorn 5s 5d to Bs, well bred f.m. ewes 10s 9d others 8s 6d to 10s, culls 5s 5d to 7s 4d, 4,6, and f.m. Hampshire Down ewes (running with rams since January) 14s, culls 8s 7d, 2-tooth ew r es from 13s to 14s Bd, and 14s lid for two well grown Romney-Lincoln lines, 4-tooth ewes ,15s 3d to 15s 6d, 6-tooth ewes 12s 9d, fat ewes 14s 6d, 2-tooth wethers 12s 9d to 14s, 4-tooth wethers 14s Id to 15s.
At Stratford on Tuesday for my fortnightly sale and sheep fair (combined) both cattle and sheep were yarded in excess of advertised numbers. The enquiry in ‘ the cattle yards was slack for most classes. Jersey Holstein weaners wore enquired for, and the demand for good weaners were better. Prices realised were:—Weaners from £1 15s to £1 18s, small £1 8s to £1 10s, choice line of Jersey weaners £3 2s, 20-mos heifers, in calf £1 7s to £4 13s, for well grown lines. Bulls from £3 10s to £7 10s, aged cows £1 2s 6d to £1 18s, store cows £2 12s 6d to £3 15s, forward cows £4 7s 6d to £4 15s, fat cows from £5 5s to £6 ss. In the sheep yards the enquiry was better, and a good proportion was cleared. A good line of 1300 6-tooth wethers (forward)' realised 15s 9d. Other prices were:—Lambs 8s 6d to 10s, culls 4s Gd to 7s sd, 2-tooth wethers 13s 3d, fat and forward ewes 13s 2d to 14s 6d, .f.f.m. ewes 9s sd, 4,6, and f.f.m. ewes 10s, f.m. ewes 6s Kkl to 9s 6d, culls 4s Gd to 5s 3d. At Stony River yards on Wednesday, I had a fair entry and attendance. Competition was good, everything being cleared mostly at the hammer at the following prices:— Grade weaner heifers £1 IGs to £1 19s Gd, weaner steers £1 14s to £1 15s colored £4 Gs, 18-months steers £3 6d, empty 18-months heifers £3 Bs, 5s to £3 9s, store cows £2 13s to £3 12s, forward cows £4 Is to £4 12s Gd ,heavy fat cows £7 4s, others £5 Is Gd to £5 10s, Holstein in calf heifers £6 2s, bulls £5 5s to £5 10s, springing heifers £5 2s Gd, 18months heifers in calf £3 15s to £4. Private Sales.—l still have a very good demand for colored heifers, and invite particulars. Best grade weaner heifers £1 15s Gd to £1 19s, colored Jersey Holsteins up to £3 10s for the best linos, f.m. ewes 9s 4d to 10s Gd, lambs 8s Gd to 10s 7d, 18moiiths steers £3 17s Gd, colored £3 4s, fat wethers 17s Gd to 18s, fat ewes 15s, fat cows £5 17s Gd to £G ss.
