ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
A PORTER’S LUCKY ESCAPE. Christchurch, February 23. J. Maxwell, a night porter at the United Service Hotel, whilst chasing a kitten on the rool fell through a glass skylight a distance of about 12 feet on to the top floor landing. He sustained injuries to the head and back, and cuts, necessitating his removal to the hospital. Had he stepped on the middle of the skylight he would have fallen to the landing of the first floor, a distance of nearly a hundred feet. Mr J. Moore, farmer, of Otakcho, ! whilst proceeding to the Kaupokonui factory at about 6.80 a.m. on F riday, found a man lying in an unconscious state on the road close to the Otakeho bridge. Mr Moore, after rendering what assistance was possible, communicated with a neighbour, and had the unfortunate man convoyed to a house near by. Hr. Milroy was communicated with, and after an examination ordered his removal to the Hawera Hospital, where, at the latest available report (states the Star) lie lies in a critical condition, suffering from concussion of the brain and a fractured skull. The unfortunate man was Mr. W. Gray don, farmer, of the Geo road, who was returning home at an early hour from Manaia.
