AN INDUSTRIAL OFFENCE.

“TEN MINUTES BEFORE TIME.” The Australian correspondent of the New Zealand Herald says that a case of interest to employers in general was heard at Geelong (Vic.) the other day, when a firm of grain merchants were charged with having permitted a carter in their employ to go out with a load of produce before the hour fixed by law, namely, 7.30 a.in. It was proved in evidence that the carter was out only 10 minutes earlier than the statutory time fixed, and then without the knowledge of hie employers. When the fact was made known to them the firm paid the driver half an hour’s overtime, and allowed him to leave work an hour earliei than usual. In imposing a fine with costs, the Magistrate held that the fact of paying the driver overtime looked as though the firm was rewarding him for turning up earlier than the Act a! lowed, and encouraging him to do so again. Their duty was to have warned the driver that his action left his employers open to prosecution, and then reported the matter to the factory inspector. If the driver offended a second time he should be dismissed. Tonking’s Linseed Emulsion, the superb and thoroughly approved popular remedy for all affect ons of the throat and lungs.
