IN CASE OF FIRE.
COAIMITTEE TO ENQUIRE INTO WATER PRESSURE. The unsatisfactory pressure in the water mains was a subject of a discussion at the Borough Council last evening, the net result being that a committee, consisting of the Mayor, Crs. Healy, Boon, and King were set up to enquire into ways and means of amending what might be, in case of fire, a grave danger to the safety of Stratford. In the course of the discussion, tho borough overseer mentioned that the nine-inch main was not discharging more water than would a seven-inch main. Cr. Boon remarked that on some evenings tho brigade could get no water at all, and if an outbreak of fire, accompanied by a strong wind, had occurred on one of these evenings, tho whole town would have been destroyed. Ho had seen the pressure as low as thirty. Cr. King said that it was not only in tho evenings but in the daytime that the pressure was low. Formerly, pressure had been as high as lOOlbs. What, he asked, was the reason of tho decrease? The Overseer replied that since the time referred to by Cr. King about eight miles of mains had been laid down and 300 connections made, every connection tending to reduce the pressure. Cr. Boon suggested as a remedy that hose taps should be taxed, and instanced what New Plymouth was do.ing in the matter. Cr. King then moved the motion to which we have referred,- and it was carried mem. dis.
