Mr R. E .Winder, of Wellington,has joined the staff of Messrs Spence and Stanford.
Lord Hardinge (Viceroy of India) is progressing satisfactorily after an operation.
Vice-Admiral Sir W. H. May has been appointed an Admiral of the Fleet.
Mr Speaker Willis has arrived back in Sydney, and states that ho was well pleased with the cordiality of his reception in New Zealand.
Ex-Captain R. H. Kivell, of the Stratford Fire Brigade, has been appointed one of the judges at the Wanganui Fire Brigade Demonstration.
Dr. Anstruther Lawson will be the occupant of the new Chair of Botany in the Sydney University, states a cablegram to-day.
Mr W. Hathaway, chairman of the Stratford County Council, was a passenger by Kie mail train this morning, en route for Feildlng where he is attending a big ram fair.
Sir George Womb well celebrated his 80th birthday recently. He and
Lord Tredegar are the only survivors of the officers who took part in the charge of the Light Brigade.
Mr Charles W. Kerry, organist at St. George’s Presbyterian Church East St. Kilda, Melbourne, has accepted an appointment to St. John’s Church, Wellington, in succession to Mr Maughan Barnett.
Mr Eric. Kivell, of the Stratford Swimming Club, had a flutter at the Hawera Club’s meeting last night, winning his heat and securing a second in the final for the 75 yards. The times were not taken.
Sir Newton Moore represented Australia at the funeral of Admiral Sir F, G. Denham Bedford, ex-Governor of Western Australia at Walton, states a London cablegram. Thir-ty-six blue jackets dragged the gun carriage. Deceased’s collie, Tony, followed the remains to the graveside.
Mr H. Rochfort, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Eltham, on being transferred to Feilding, was farewelled by the citizens and presented with a silver tea and coffee service and a set of pipes. The service bore the following inscription :—“Presented to Mr-and Mrs H. Rochfort as a mark of esteem from the residents of Eltham and district on the occasion of their departure for Feilding, 3rd February, 1913.”
The Rev. Father McManus, of Inglewood, was farewelled at a social in the Parish Hall, when there was a large attendance. On behalf of the congregation, Mr Rowe presented an illuminated address and a purse of sovereigns. Miss Stevens, on behalf of the Society of the “Children of Mary,” presented a travelling bag; and on behalf of the Hibernian Society Mr M‘Mahon presented a smoker’s outfit. The Very Rev. Dean M'Kenna made a short speech, very complimentary to Father MacManus and his work.
Mr Henry Stead, who is now on his ■way out to Australia, intends to settle permanently in Melbourne. Ho is accompanied by his wife and three children. Mr Stead is the eldest son of W. T. Stead, who perished in the Titanic disaster. For nearly fifteen years the two were very closely associated on the “Review of Reviews.” In connection with the business, Mr Stead visited many lands and interviewed many notable folk. He accompanied his father on most of the great journalist’s tours round Europe, and assisted at interviews with emperors and ■ kings,, statesmen and potentates. He is no stranger to Australia, having resided there for eighteen months some six years ago, and he will be welcomed by many friends' throughout the Commonwealth. He has acquired the “Review of Reviews for Australasia” from his father’s estate, and intends developing it considerably at once. He has a great faith in the future of Australia, is deeply interested in political matters there, and will probably soon have a good deal to say about them in the “Review of Reviews.” In addition to his other activities, Mr Steal will act as the correspondent in Australia for the Daily News and Leader,’ ’gf London.
