- BOARDING HOUSE BURNED. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Press Association.) New York, February 3. The Saint Nicholas apartments at Sacramento, were burnt while the guests were at breakfast. Five are known to be dead. The fire was due to a defective oilburner in the basement. THE AUSTRO-AMERICAN LINE. London, February 3. The Austro-Americah Steamship Co. is being financed mainly by the Deutsche Bank. It announces monthly sailings, starting in March, from Trieste and St. Johns in the winter, and Montreal in the summer. NIPPED IN THE BUD. London, February 3. A man boarded the Kinui at Plymouth and discovered his wife and two children in the second-class with her lover. She reluctantly abandoned the elopement, being told that she would be deported when she reached Australia. BREAKING THE EXCISE LAW. Paris, February 3. A .wholesale spirit merchant has been fined £60,000 for offences against the .excise law. THE OPIUM TRAFFIC. Pekin, February 3, Opium-growing has been stamped out except in certain areas in Fukien, Sonan, Shensi, Kansu, and Kangchow. Opium smokers were disfranchised at the recent elections. All the political parties are supporting the. Government.
THE AGRA TRAGEDY. Calcutta, February 2. At the Agra trial Budhu stated that four days before the murder ■ Clark requested him to accelerate the crime. Budhu asked for blood money first. Budhu and Sukhia .went t,o .Fulham’s bungalow on the evening of the murder to discuss t)ie plans. Clark showed them six sovereigns and ten rupees bipod money. Ram Lai, Sukhia Mohan, Budhu Kanliar, and himself went to Mrs Clark’s with a large knife, which Mphan kissed, worshipped and then sharpened. After Clark arrived he removed the dog which was barking. Budhu pointed out the wife, and held the lantern, while Mohan stabbed her with the knife. The raurIderers ran off when the daughter screamed. MOTOR BANDITS. Paris, February 3. Many police and soldiers assembled at the trial of twenty motor bandits, charged with 33 murdersj The trial is expected to last eighteen days. There are 304 witnesses. THE KNIGHT-ERRANT. (Received 9.40 a.m.) London, February 3. The chief constable at Leeds states that the Rev. Mr Knight, who, it was cabled recently, threw himself off Flaraborough Head, is not dead, but that he left the country under an assumed name and is believed to have gone to Australia. TREYANION’S ESTATE. (Received 10.50 a.m.) ' London, February 3. The Probate Court has appointed a receiver in.-Trevanion’s . estate pending further action.
