THE OIL INDUSTRY.

PROMISING REPORTS FROM NEW PLYMOUTH.

(Per Press Association.)

New Plymouth, January 31

The first shipment of machinery for the iaranaki Oil Lands Company is now being delivered on the' site of the bore, about 150 yards from the Taranaki Oil Wells Company’s No. 5 Well, which is yielding oil. The plant is of the best and most modern typo. The manager expects to start drilling early in March. Gas has been struck.in the Taranaki Oil Company’s bores at Bell Block, indicating _that the field extends several miles east of New Plymouth,

At the Stratford Court to-day! J. A. Thompson was eon dieted witnbfat' a fine, for driving a vehicle without a license; H. Trotter, for driving without lights, was also treated in this manner, there being extenuating circumstances. A conviction for a similar offence was also entered against a Stratford lady, whoso trap lights had gone out.

A few days ago a correspondent asked certain questions relative to the conduct of ihe borough’s affairs. At the time the Mayor was asked by a reporter of the “Stratford Evening Post” if he would care to reply to our correspondent’s. letter, but His Worship said, “I have only this to say: I treat anonymous correspondence of this nature with absolute contempt.” However, an answer to one of the questions, as to why certain Court proceedings against a local carrier were withdrawn, is to be found in to-day’s Court news, when the carrier was convicted on a charge of driving an unregistered vehicle. The Borough Inspector explained that the license fee had been paid by defendant before the summons was received, and the Town Clerk had therefore instructed the Inspector to ask leave to withdraw. The Magistrate refused to grant this leave and entered a conviction.
