UN IV ERSIT Y SEN ATE. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, January 29. The University Senate resolved that a special meeting he held at Wellington a fortnight after the receipt oi the English examiners’ results, wit a »power to deal with awarding■ degrees, honours and scholarships; that next meeting be held in Dunedin on January 17th, 1914; that the ten Junior University Scholarships lie awarded on the December examinations, 191*3; that the matter of a Conservatoriuin ol Music was left in the hands ot the Council at Auckland; and that the University Senate take no further action until the whole scheme is submitted for its apporval by Auckland Council. . The following graduate® with degrees obtained outside New Zealand were admitted to the University of New Zealand: Olaf"Eshout (Wellington), Henry W. Mayo (Gisborne), Graham H. Balfour (Dunedin), Frances C. Kilroe (Wellington), Ambrose 1. Griffith (Feilding), James Hale (Timaru). HECTOR MEMORIAL. Wellington, January 29. The Hector Memorial Committee reported to the Zealandia Institute today that they were unanimously ol 'opinion that ‘the Hector Medal for 1913 should bo awarded to Professor Easterfield, Victoria College, for distinguished work in chemical research, especially in connection with New Zealand produce, the work having a direct as well as an indirect hearing on the scientific knowledge, life, and prosperity of the community. The recommendation was adopted. Mr Thomson, chairman of the Award Committee, read a letter from Professor Orme Masson expressing an opinion on the original intention of the trust, whother it was to make the award for work done in New Zealand or not. It was decided to obtain a legal opinion as to whether the deed of trust, being m contravention of the report of the Hoctor Memorial Committee, adopted by the Board ,of Governors, could he alt*crcd. ‘ LONG-DISTANCE WIRELESS. Wellington, January 29. The long-distance wireless record of 2500 miles which the Ulimaroa was recently credited with, has been beaten by the Moeraki on her last trip Wel-lington-to-Sydney. She got into communication with the Moana at a distance, approximately, of 2900 miles.
