AUSTRALIA’S BIRTHDAY. CELEBRATIONS IN LONDON. (Received 1,2.10 p.m.) ( London, January 27. The newspapers devoted some attention to Australia’s birthday. Thousands wore the wattle in the streets, and a. crowded gathering took place at the Colonial Institute. Sir George Reid expressed regret at Mr. Deakin’s ill,health, and retirement, stating that he had devoted the whole of his brilliant gifts to public life, and had rendered memorable services to the State, the Commonwealth, and the Empire. Mr. Joseph Cook would be a worthy successor. Sir George gave a summary of facts showing Australia’s remarkable progress. The hope was generally expressed that the celebrations would be teenacted on a large scale in 1914. . '
