THE AMERICAN NAVY.
REPLY TO CANADIAN LIBELS
Washington, January 21
Great indignation is expressed at Washington at the statements of Major Sharpe in the Ottawa Parliament to the effect that few native Americans entered the United States Navy, and that those actually joining I were no good, morally or socially; land that the navy was simply a home ; for destitutes,, moral degenerates, and deserters from foreign ships.
Admiral Dewey has denied Major Sharpe’s statements, asserting that Americans were the equal of any sailors in the world, and that the round-the-world cruise of the fleet proved this. Ninety per cent, of the~sailors were native-born Americans.
