Nelson, January 20. The Primate presided over the Anglican General Synod to-day. A petition from the Amuri parochial district, praying for' severance from the Nelson diocese and attachment to Christchurch, was referred to a special committee to report to the Synod.

The committee set up to report on Archdeacon Harper’s motion re social service committees, reported that such committees were already in existence in several dioceses, and recommended that all dioceses be asked to form them with a central committee at Wellington.

The committee appointed in 1910 to consider the method and procedure in altering the Prayer Book under circumstances contemplated in clause 4 of the fundamental provisions, reported that in its opinion its was unnecessary to formulate any special method of procedure.

The Bishop of Auckland drew attention to the Marsden centenary, which is to take place on Christmas Day, 1914. He moved: That the Synod feels that an event which commemorates both the introduction of Christianity and the foundation of the colony should be marked by a commemoration worthy of the occasion. This was carried.

The Bishop asked the Synod to endorse the following proposals of the bench of Bishops: (a) That a series of services in Maori and English should be held at the Marsden Cross site, where the first Christian service was held, during Christmas week. 1914; (b) that a church congress for all New Zealand he held at Auckland in February, 1915; (c) that a great thanksgiving centenary fund be raised throughout New Zealand, and every church member be asked to contribute, the same to be composed of a coin for every year of life that God has given them; (d) that an advisory committee be set up for this purpose. It was decided that the proposed church congress be held at Auckland. The Bishop of Auckland detailed the proposals that had been amended by the Bench of Bishops for the disposal of the thanksgiving centenary fund: (1) Englargement of St. John’s College (Auckland); (2) foundation of a Taranaki bishopric; (3) formation of a general bishopric fund; (4) a medical missionary travelling scholarship; (5) the establishment of a series of travelling scholarships, one for each diocese, -which would enable the worthiest 'divinity students to visit Europe and America for further theologoical study ; (6) to raise a fund to advance the Bible in schools movement.

The whole of clause (c) of the Bishops’ proposals was subsequently referred back to the bishops. It was resolved that an advisory committee, consisting of the Bishop and two representatives to be selected by representatives of the several diocese, bo set up for the above purposes.
