WORK AND WAGES.
N.S.W. MINING OUTLOOK. Sydney, January 18. The outlook in the southern mining district has improved. Mr. Carmichael yesterday addressed the miners and promised to amend the law to prevent a recurrence of the conditions leading to the dismissal of Russell. In the northern district conditions are unaltered. The mine owners have not replied yet to the request of the Employees’ Federation for a conference to discuss the reorganisation of a joint conciliation committee.
WOMEN GARMENT WORKERS
(Received 8.5 a.m.) New York, January 19
Hatpins, umbrellas, and women’s weapons figured in a fierce attack upon the police during the garment workers’ strike. Dozens of women were arrested. Many of the police were injured. Forty thousand Chicago garment workers are planning a sympathetic strike.
Thirty thousand dress and shirt waist makers were granted an increase of wages, and it is likely they will resume work, despite dissatisfaction at the smallness of the increase.
