CYCLING. (Received 9.35 a.m.) Melbourne, January 20. On a motor cycle from Sydney to Melbourne, a distance of 572 miles, J. Gunn, a New Zealander, cut it out in 25 hours 55 minutes—a record.
Tho recently established motor cycle record of 29 hours 43 minutes for the Sydney-Melbourne overland route?. 572 miles, by J. Fair (N.S.W.), was not allowed to stand long, for C. A. Mimcly, a Victorian rider, last week succeeded in clipping 13 minutes oil Fair’s time. Mundy, who rede a3l h.p. Rudge, put up a particularly fine performance, as lie was handicapped by having to repair 27 punctures; Fair had none. Several further attempts are to be made at an early date to better Mundy’s figures, which, considering the tyre troubles he had, must be fairly easy to reduce. SHOOTING. The Stratford Gun Club is firing the second competition of the series lor the Ballistite Cup on Thursday next. Mr G. D. Hunter, the club’s secretary, told a reporter this morning that the Boswell gun, imported by the club, is expected to arrive in a few days. If the illustrations arc any guide, the gun should lie a beauty, costing as it does twenty-five guineas. Boswell’s weapons are recognised as being some of the finest guns made. Local shots are looking forward to the shoot, when the gun will be competed for. Tho match will be open to club members only, but as the subscription is only ss, it is certain that the majority of Taranaki shots will be all there, eager to secure such a useful trophy.
