The chairman reported that Mr C. Rouerts, recently with the VVamiute West Oounty Council, had been appointed Oliver on tue steam rouci roller.

The matter of arranging for fencing the recently acquired cottage site ana quarry mle on the comer of Manaia and Upunake Roads was referred to the members of tne riding concerned.

The engineer was authorised to replace witu a large pipe culvert tne small bridge on tne Cardiff road, mentioned in nis report, and to ease tne grades, it being reported that accidents nad occurred in that locality. Engineer’s Report. The County Engineer (Mr E. C. Robinson) reported as follows Tenders have been nivited for supply of 600 cubic yards of. boulders at junction of Pembroke and Cardiff roads. Work in hand: Tiie remetalling of portion of Wawni road has been commenced. The metalling contract on Mangaehu road is proceeding slowly. The boulder contracts in West Riding with the exception of the Upper Waingongoro one have been practically completed. A start has been made with the tunnel and filling on Barclay road. The Makuri Valley drainage contract is progressing steadily. After much delay*the hardwood timber for Finnerty road bridge lias been carted from Ngaere railway station on the site of works. General: The small bridge on Cardiff road I reported on some few months ago is now in a dangerous state, and requires replacing with a large pipe culvert without delay. The cost of this work would be about £65. As the crushing plant will be moving round to the West Riding very shortly tenders should be at once called for the necessary boulders on Lower Palmer road. As instructed I have inspected the Ratapiko and Makara roads, near County boundary, and as a result estimate that the cost of the regrading and improvements contemplated would be £4.0 on each road. 1 obtained an allowance of £ls from Anderson’s on account of roller wheels. The grader has been doing good work on "East Riding roads, and lias now been started on Pukengaliu road. Foremen’s Reports. North Riding (West). —Mountain road metalling: Finished crushing on December 27th. No. of yards in all, 1869 (including 34 yards for Rutland road and ten yards for Waipuku creamery. The binding is also finished. The balance of Waipuku Bridge decking has been carted up to the County stable to be used in the future for repair works. The old deck of Manganui bridge is of no use for this purpose. I will make an offer of £1 for the lot, and will undertake to clear it away within one month of date of sale. The deck of the Gentle. Annie bridge on Cardiff road has Been patched, but is in a bad state. The work of repairing York and Derby roads and of getting out the boulders for York road will be put in hand forthwith. North Riding (East). —The roads under my care are generally in fair older except some of the back ones which, owing to the pressure of metalling work, I have not had time to attend to. The new metal in Beaconslield road has been raked in and blinded, and is now setting fairly wtfll. Crushing operations are in hand on Salisbury road and should be finished about the end of the neck. The settlers on Makuri road have asked that it bo put in repar. It would take about £l2 to do the necessary work. South Riding.—Most of the month has been spent in raking up loose stones and blinding. Mounta.n, Sole, Climie and Warwick have been so treated. The Pukengaliu road Las been cleared of logs prior to working the grader. The hist liiinerty road bridge lias been redecked. The roads are generally in fair order. East Riding (Toko). —The Makuri and Mangaehu No. 1 roads have been thoroughly crowned up with the grader, the grass trimmed off the edges of metal on Raupuha road, and new watertables cut. The Beacons field road lias been raked in and blinded.

East Riding (Douglas).—All the roads under my care are in fair order. We have been blinding, banking, watertabling, and doing geheral road work on Olmra and Ohura-Mangaehu roads.

East Riding (Huiroa). —General road work and repairs have been carried out on the various roads under my charge which are now in fair order. The decking on Waitara river suspension bridge is rotten and wants renewing from end to end. The deck of a small bridge on Makuri road west is in a similar condition. West Riding.—The work of regrading Malone’s Hill is now nearly completed. It has been delayed somewhat owing to some wet weather and the holidays. Mangaehu Riding.—All the roads under my charge are in very fair order. lire man I had on the Taihore road has left and the work is at a standstill until I can get another. McPhee has started metalling again and has got about 13 chains down.
