TIGERS BY RAIL.

Adventures beyond the wildest dream of an ordinary railway porter are suggested by the following calm announcement of railway rates in the ‘Manual of Statistics of the Federated Malav States: —

Elephants, 20 cents per mile cadi

Alligators, hears, hyenas, panthers tigers, and similar animals, 10 cents

per mile each. Alohkeys, * cent per mile each

Snakes, in baskets, parcels rates. It is hotter to send an elephant to a friend than a corpse in a coffin, for the latter will cost you 50 cents each per mile, with a minimum charge of five dollars. Tom-toms go at 1} cents per pikul per mile. It is obvious that people who send snakes and Tom-toms by rail might want to have a procession. Therefore it is enacted that a license for every religious or other procession of over 500 people, for twelve hours or less, with music, costs £5, or, without music, £2.

But though local customs and conditions are strange in English eyes, the Malay States are in a flourishing condition.
