CRICKET.
At Auckland on Wednesday afternoon, after Oliff had performed the hat trick hy dismissing the last three Wellington batsmen with three successive balls, a collection was taken up spontaneously among the enthusiastic spectators, and in a few minutes just on £5 was subscribed, and was unofficially/ handed to the bowler. Oliff received 'a token of appreciation also from a very well-known ex-player, whose tribute bad a humorous touch. He presented the bowler with an order on a firm of mercers for a hat, with the stipulation that the bat should be a bell-topper. Up to date the stipulation has not been withdrawn; neither has the little spin howler made any public appearance hatted in the symbol of respectability prescribed in the order. Hemus, the Auckland skipper, was presented by an anonymous enthusiast with half a guinea, with which to purchase a trophy as a souvenir of the match. The gift was in recognition of Hemus having made top score for Auckland.
