ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
A DROWNING FATALITY. (Per Press Association.) Christchurch, January 5. Another drowning fatality occurred at Sumner to-day. A man named Charles Wetherall Hatchard, thirty years old, living in Bath Street, lost his life. He was bathing m the estuary near the pier at the time. SAD ACCIDENTAL DEATH. GIRL SHOT BY HER BROTHER. Wellington, January G. Dorothy Campion, aged 10, resi ling at Waikanae, was accidentally shot by her brother. He was playfully handling the gun, not knowing it was loaded, when the weapon exploded, the contents entering the gild’s side, killing her almost immediately.
The ‘Horowhcnua Chronicle’ reports the saving of a white hoy’s life by a Maori lad at Hokio Beach. A boy named Percy Blows was in parlous condition beyond the breakers, and the Maori lad (Simeon) promptly raced to where a horse was tethered, galloped it through the surf, and swam it to where Blows by that time was drowning. On the ability of the horse to swim back, bearing the two lads’ weight, both their lives depended. Simeon had Blows across the pummel of the saddle quite unconscious, but this position was an excellent “lirst aid’ one, and within a few minutes Blows was breathing again. The horse proved equal to his task, but it was a long while after Blows was safely ashore before he completely recovered. A nasty accident befell the wellI known jockey iL Deeley, at Wlcrslie, lon Tuesday. A Idle in the “birdcage,” i Miss Winsome gave a continued display of kicking, and alien Deeley mounted the marc she immediately reared high in the air, and fell over on her back, crushing her rider beneath her. Deeley had to he carried into the jockeys’ room, where he was attended by Dr. Shannon. 'though badly bruised and shaken, there were, fortunately, no hones broken. Miss Winsome was at once taken out ol the race by her owner, Mr. D. McLeod. Doeley’s injuries were sufficient .to prevent him from keeping his enI gacements for the rest of the meeting.
