“DONE TO DEATH.”
INQUEST ADJOURNED
Wellington, January 3.
At the inquest on Michael Malone, who died in the gaol yesterday, Dr. W. K. Kyffe expressed the opinion that the man had been done to death. He was arrested on Tuesday for drunkenness and remanded on Wednesday for curative treatment. Dr. Kyffe commented strongly on the absence of suitable provision for treating such cases, and then detailed the result of the post mortem. This showed that deceased had a dozen marks on the body, including a fracture of the skull 3$ inches long. He believed that the man had beer knocked about. The injuries could not have been inflicted as the resul' of falling while drunk. Malone had been kicked or struck with a heavy instrument. After evidence had been given by the police and the gaol officers, th< inquest was adjourned till to-morrow.
