THE DEFENCE SCHEME.
HOW IT HAS WORKED
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, January 4
An interesting return has been compiled showing how the Territorial Defence scheme has worked, and how the provisions of the Act have been observed up to 30th November last. In the whole of New Zealand there have been only 362 refusals to take the oath, and there have been, out of the large army of men enrolled, only 1161 absentees from drill in both Senior Cadets and Territorials recorded since the Act came into force. For dereliction of duty, 904 Territorials and 154 Senior Cadets have been convicted, and only 68 people have been imprisoned. On 31st May last, 61.797 Senior Cadets and Territorials had registered.
