PTOMAINE POISONING

(Per Press Association.) Wanganui, January 3

The health authorities have been making investigations, and it is thought that some of the cream supplied to the ice cream vendor must have been tainted. The shop in question is very popular, the proprietor being extremely careful and scrupulously clean. Some of the sufferers, who include whole families, have been very ill, but the majority are now on the road to recovery. BIBLE IN SCHOOLS. Timaru, January 3. The Presbyterian Bible Class Conference, now sitting at Temuka, on Wednesday morning unanimously passed the following resolution, after hearing an address on the subject by tho Rev. R. G. Porter, of Oamaru. It was moved by the Rev. G. H. Balfour, president! that this conference of Bible Class delegates (there being 535 registered members) accepts the policy of the Bible*State -Schools League, and the members pledge themselves earnestly to support it by assisting t< form branches of the league, and tha* in the meantime they suggest that all interested should take advantage of tho facilities already within their reach for giving religious instruction. THE REAL REASON. Wellington, January 3. It transpires that the reason for the abandonment of the Maori’s trip from Wellington to Picton on New Year’s Day was not that the fireman demanded 30s, and were refused by the company, hut simply that the weather conditions were unsatisfactory. SOME INVETERATE GRUMBLERS. Timaru, January 3. Dr. G. E. Gabites, who was surgeon on the Mamari on her trip from Herne writes to the ‘Herald’ to correct tiu impression conveyed by the publication of complaints made in Wellingto by some of the passengers that they were hustled from Dunedin to Lyttelton by special train on Christmas Day without reasonable notice, and that many had no food on the journey while others got some at Oamaru and Ashburton refreshment rooms.

Dr. Gabites states that they were warned early in the morning that they were to entrain at the port. The medical officer completed his inspection at 7.30, in time for breakfast at 8, allowing an hour for breakfast. Tney had still an hour before boarding the train alongside the ship, and they entrained quietly and without any trouble, their cabin luggage being placed on the train for them. There was plenty of room, one car being nearly empty. A large quantity of food—bread and butter, meat and cheese—was prepared for the passengers to take with them, but only a few availed themselves of it, so those who had no food on the way had only themselves to blame.

The doctor thinks that tho e responsible for the transport are to he congratulated on tho completeness of their arrangements, and that the complaints were probably made by some inveterate grumblers.
