THE BOXER INDEMNITY.

As the Powers have not replied to a request for an extension of time, China is unable to pay the portion of the Boxer indemnity which is due today. Russia threatens foreclosure on some source of revenue. Hongkong, January 1. The leading banks have averted a crisis by not calling on merchants to provide a further margin to cover the depreciation of hypothecated opium.
