“WHEN I PUT OUT TO SEA. "

! ( > ' * (Per Press Association.'; Arthur Barnes, aged 30, of New. Engen, Kent, England, who came to New Zealand seven years ago, was drowned at Waipiro Bay last evening. In company with a friend named Gumming, Barnes was riding on the beach, having mounted a horse. Barnes had never previously ridden the animal, which commenced bucking and made out to sea, rolling over in the deep surf. Gumming endeavoured to rescue him by swimming out on his own horse, but Barnes’ horse plunged badly and though Cummings got hold of him he could not free him from the saddle. Settlers launched a boat and found the horse 50 yards outside the breakwater, but there was no trace of Barnes, whose body was subsequently washed on the beach.
