ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.

A GUNSHOT SUICIDE

(Per Press Association.) Dunedin, December 30,

An inquest was held this afternoon before, Mr. Graham (Coroner) on a body, supposed to be that of Charles B. Jarman, who was found dead in the husk on Thursday. Dr. Gordon MacDonald said that the body was that of a man of about sft 7in in height, and about 40 years old. In the man’s pocket he found a new razor which had not been used. He also found a hank receipt upon the Union Bank, with a name like Jarman on it. In the ■■ shirt, in the region of the heart, he found a small hole and in the singlet and skin there was a corresponding hole. He would say that the man died from a bullet wound.

Captain Beaumont said that C. J. Jarman was a clerk in his employ for about five years. Witness last saw him on the evening of December 2. Jarman knew witness had received a letter from the department stating tliat his books were to he overhauled. Jarman said that everything was in order, and witness had no doubt on the matter. Jarman did not turn up next morning, and on his hooks being examined it Was found that there was a deficiency of £62. It was very difficult to state the exact amount of the deficiency without a complete audit of the books. Witness identified the writing- on the letter found on the body as that of Jarman. The Coroner said that there was no doubt in bis mind that the body was that of Jarman, and he brought in a verdict that the cause of death was a gunshot wound self-inflicted while deceased was in a state of insanity. A FATAL FALL. Dunedin, December 30. News has been received that a boy named John Gordon Mitchell, son of Mr. W. Mitchell, North East Valley, was the victim of a fatal accident at Clydevalc on Friday. Deceased, who was eight and a half years of age, went to Clydevale on Friday for the holidays, and while out with Mr. Bunn he was thrown from a horse, fracturing his skull. The boy died on Saturday.
