TRAMCAR RUNS AWAY.
NO FATALITIES. FOURTEEN PASSENGERS INJURED. Sydney, December 29. A tram smash caused a tremendous sensation in the centre of the city on Saturday afternoon. A car was mounting the hill in King street when the brakes failed. The car ran back dashed across Castlereagh and Pitt streets and collided with a car behind near George street. The spectacle of a car running or the wrong line furiously, some ptssengors looking anxiously out of tin doors, others jumping off, ajrd women screaming, attracted the attention o? hundreds on the crowded streets, anc when the runaway crossed Castlereagl street the crowd ran after it at though joining in a chase. . Warning shouts enabled the dnyei of the car at the intersection of Pitt street to stop in time to avoid a righangled collision. _ . Tho runaway had its ironwork twist cd badly and the woodwork smashed to splinters. The damage was so ex tensive that it is surprising that then were no fatalities. Fourteen passengers were taken tc the hospital.
