STRANDED IMMIGRANTS
Sydney, December 24. The newspaper ‘Sun’ states that six families, mostly agriculturalists, recently arrived from England on route to New Zealand', are stranded in Sydney. It is asserted that they paid third-class passages on the understanding that it included the cost ot transhipment from Sydney to New Zealand'. 1 On landing they found that no satisfactory arrangements had been made for completing the journey. Tney are practically without funds, and tne various missions are looking after them. CYCLONE IN NEW SOUTH WALES Sydney, December 24. Following the severe heat, there was a cyclone of wind. The storm, accompanied by heavy ram, hail and lightning, passed over Matong. Buildings were unroofed, chimneys blown down, and crops damaged. Property to the value of £2OOO was damaged. THE TASMAN SEA CABLE. Sydney, December 25. The Eastern Extension Company’s cable steamer Patrol has returned. She completed repairs to the cables across the Tasman Sea. FIRE IN A FLOUR MILL. Chicken’s flour mills at Homebush were gutted by fire. A large quantity of flour and wheat was destroyed, and machinery ruined. The damage is estimated at £16,000. Insurances, in the Manchester Union, amount to £10,300. A BANK ROBBERY. Melbourne, December 24. Ar official of the State Savings Bank counted £l5O, consisting of a hundred pound note and five tenners. He then turned round and a hand was immediately stretched oyci’ the counter and seized the notes. It was the busiest period of the day, and the bank was crowded. It is not known whether the perpetrator left or mixed with the throng.
