“DAD HAS THE CASH.”

NEW CONFIDENCE TRICK

( A new “gag” designed to get something for nothing was pub into operation the other day in Sydney. Two young men, dressed in American style—long coats and baggy trousers—visited the premises of W. Lowe, Ltd., and asked to be shown some ready-to-wear clothing. Each selected a suit and bought goods in other departments to the value in all of £5. When the parcel was made up they saw the manager and told him that if the, goods were sent to Tattersall’s Hotel the bill would be paid. “Dad,” explained, one of them, “has the cash;” A messenger boy was sent out with the goods with instructions not to deliver thorn until he received the money. When ho gob to the hotel at the Wynm^ men were waiting outside for him. “Give us the parcel,” said one, “and ■wo will go upstairs and try the suits on. If they fit we will get the cash off dad, who is inside, and wo wull bo down in a minute or two and pay you.” The boy was keen to make the sale, and handed the parcel over. But ho did not wait outside as instructed. Keeping himself out of sight he folowed them. They did not go upstairs, as they said they would. Instead they made for the George Street exit of the hotel. The boy did not wait for explanations. He sneaked up behind them, grabbed the parcel, and raced away for his life.

The parcel is now at Lowe’s awaiting claimants, who, so far, have not turned up. Enquiries at the hotel showed that there is no one of the name given by the young men staying on the premises.
