Rumours are again current of Mr. Holman’s pending retirement from politics. His opposition to the referenda proposals are said to he causing the trouble. The Hon. Mr. James Allen, interviewed, expressed the opinion that Xew Zealand, Canada, and Austra ia would join hands some day in defence of the Pacific. It was too ranch to ask the Mother Country to do it. That was our duty. During his visit to Melbourne Mr. Allen attends a meeting of the Defence Council. Mr. Pearce extended the invitation. Melbourne, December 18. ■
The High Court decision in the Merchant Service Guild case lias caused much dissatisfaction. Members of the organisation in the inter-State shipping strike predicted that if the companies revert to the old rates of payment, the men were determined if the proposals shortly placed before the employers wore not accepted, they would cease work in each State. Hobart, December 18.
Professor Flynn, biologist, on the Aurora, in an interview, said the specimens obtained during dredging were representative of practically every invertebate class. They would be distributed to scientists for examination. In the description of the fish secured at great depths be said they were weird and apparently new to science.
