SHORTAGE OF RAILWAY TRUCKS.

(Per Press Association.) Invercargill, December 13.

The shortage of trucks is causing great inconvenience to commercial and business firms in Southland. The Town Council is finding difficulty in getting trucks for coal for the gasworks, and metal from the quarry for the roads. Representations .on the matter are being made to the Minister for Railways by the Town Council and the Chamber of Commerce. A business man stated to-day that the volume of business had increased by 40 per cent, while the trucking capacity had increased only 3 per cent.

THE HATPIN DANGER

Auckland, December 12

The hat-pin danger was brought under the notice of the City Council this evening in a letter from the Tramways’ Union, which stated that on Saturday last a conductor had an eye seriously injured by a pin protruding from a lady’s hat, and, in consequence, was at present unable to follow bis usual occupation. The union urged that a by-law making it an offence for a lady 10 wear protruding bat-pins in a tramcar should be framed. The Mayor, Mr. C. J. Parr, remarked that the Council had done nothing previously, as it had been ol opinion that no move should lie made until something definite was brotig it before it. ft was resolved that the By-laws Committee he instructed to frame a regulation to deal with the matter.

THE FIRE ON THE HAUROTO. Auckland, December 12. The account given by the carotake” is to tlie effect that he was fishing off the stern of the Hauroto about 2 a.in. when ho noticed that one of the cabins on the port side was in flames before lie cast his fishing line. He had left in that cabin a small lamp, which was lighted, and which had probably exploded or capsized. In h s opinion that would probably be the cause of the fire. The damage is estimated at .£IOOO.
