DOMAIN BOARD.

Monthly m eetin g

The monthly meeting of the Stratford Domain Board was held yesterday afternoon, when there were present Messrs G. N. Curtis (in the chair), T. H. Penn, P. F. Ralfe, R. McK. Morison, and W. P. Kirkwood. Several sections in Regan street were transfered from Mr Davey to Mr J. A. Thompson, subject to the same conditions under which the former tenant held them.

The chairman reported that a piece of galvanised piping had been removed from the suspension bridge in the Domain. Whether it had been accidently broken off or had been removed, by ,some persons; he did not know. A short discussion ensued as to whether it would be advisable to offer a £5 reward, in order to discover the delinquent, but eventually it was decided to allow the matter to drop. The bridge will be repaired immediately. Mr T. H. Penn moved, and the chairman seconded, that the Borough Council be reminded of their promise to make a footpath or other proper access from Broadway to the Domain, via Fenton street. The Mayor said that, if the motion was carried, he would see that it was done within a week.

Mr T. H. Penn asked a question that many another person has been asking of late—“ What has become of the Beautifying Society?” Mr W. P. Kirkwood replied that the season for planting had practically passed, and for that reason he had Conferred with other members and they had decided not to hold any meeting for the present. The chairman mentioned that in April next the term of office of the Domain Board would expire. They had been in office for ten years, and he did not know whether the Borough Council might not. take over the duties of the Board. According to the Act, if it was decided that the Domain Board should still exist, the members would be elected for a term of seven years only; the board would also expire on that date, unless granted a new lease of life.

The Mayor said that the Borough Council could not do more than had been done by the Domain Board. Mr Penn remarked that if the Borough Council assumed the duties of the Board, it might happen that not a single councillor elected had any interest in such work. The matter of the granting of the piece of land to the Fire Brigade was mentioned. It was found that permission had been granted to the Brigade to instal the plug on June 14th. The caiman had been under a misapprehension as to the exact position required, and stated that the promise should not hold good for ever, but if not availed of within, a reasonable time should lapse. A member remarked that this was hardly fair to the Brigade, since it was the Council who hung things up; the Council had not the neessary funds, and preferred to place the matter on the estimates for the next year.

A motion was passed to the effect that the Brigade should make a fresh application, when a piece of ground would bo given them. A member asked if the southern side of Victoria Park would not lie suitable, but it was mentioned that Fenton street was not equipped with a big enough main.
