The Government’s acceptance of the bulk of the Council’s amendments has favourably affected Australian gas shares, which- sold at £1.5 10s, a rise of £lO,, to-day.

Sir Geo, Reid, reporting on his visit to the United States, says that, the Americans are fast approaching a stage when our producers will be able to deal with them. A downward revision of their tariff should help Australian trade. The cost of living had become a keen anxiety, a grievance which should help our primary industries. It would be impossible to secure for Australia more desirable immigrants than the farmers emigrating to Canada from the United States rn ever increasing numbers. He recommends earnestly the establishment of Australian agencies in New- York, Chicago and San Francisco;
LAND SETTLEMENT
Sydney, December 5
Mr Column, in a speech at Wellington (N.S.W.), defending the Government, said that before iit left office over three million acres had been opened up to settlement. It was the first Government, which did not make the interests of a single city dominate those of the State. THE GAS BIDD. A party compromise has been effected in the Gas Bill, which will probably end the dispute between the Co. and its employees, the company reengaging the men.
PARLIAMENT ADJOURNS. (Received 9.15 a.m.) Sydney, December 5. After a series of protracted sittings which Avere occupied chiefly in works Bills, covering several millions, the session has ended. Amongst the measures shelved are the Income Tax, Early Closing, State Iromvorks, and Tenants’ Improvement Bills. Twenty-three petitions were presented against the Government’s action in connection Avith Government House. 1 j In reply to questions, Mr McGowen declined to accept a challenge to produce letters Avhich it was stated he had received endorsing the Government’s action. Regarding, the legal opinion obtained, be said if an injunction to restrain the GoA'ernmont can oe obtained, lot it.
