PAPUA’S PROSPECTS.
GOLD. ALL OVER THE ISLAND. Sydney, November 22. ’ Mr G. Pott, of New Zealand, has returned from Papua after enquiring into the conditions of settlement there on behalf of relatives. He considers the country has a very good future, but it is a long way off. He is sure that it is cocoanuts that will principally do it eventually. He declares that the natives are handled very badly. They are pampered too much, and get tucker given to them when not working. It is difficult to obtain land, which is all in the hands of the big companies. Mr Leisch, owner of the Woodlark Gold Mine at Papua, says that the miners are getting gold all over the island. Everyone is doing well. The Mt. Morgan Company is negotiating to purchase the Woodlark Mine.
