MISCELLANEOUS CABLES.
Splendid, rains have fallein the Riverina though probably it is too late for the early wheat crops to greatly benefit. An attempt to tow off the barque Helen Craig at the Melbourne Heads was unavailing, but it is expected the vessel will be floated off at next high tide. The superintendent of the Peninsular and Oriental Shipping Company, referring to the reported slrpping combine, says he is in possession of certain knowledge in connection with the matter, but does not attach any importance to the cabled report. Owing to the scarcity of whales in the, viciirty of Jervois Bay (N.S.W.), the Whaling Company is sending its vessels to Cuttle Bay, New Zealand, where the headquarters will be established. The New South Wales Cricket Association has recommended the acceptance of the New Zealand Council’s invitation to send a team to tour the Donrnion during February and March, provided the team consists of thirteen players and a manager, and not twelve players as New Zealand suggested.
