SCULLING.
(By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.; (United Press Association.) Sydney, November 3. Arnst has offered to row Pearce’s three challengers—Felton, Padcbn, and Towns-—for a sweepstake of £IOJ per man, the winner taking the lot, and Arnst allowing ten seconds’ start.
“Rigger,” of the ‘Sydney Daily Telegraph,’ writes: “Messrs. Peter Kemp, sen., Geo. Towns, and Harry Floyd have expressed the opinion that H irry Pearce should not go to Engl, nd to race Barry on public moneys until he has proved that he is the best man in Australia. “To prove who is the best man, it is further stated, Geo. Towns and Peter Kemp are going to put up a prize of £101), entrance fee, for a race on tho Parramatta, all scullers to start from scratch and the winner to race Pearce. ... “Just what this proposal is going to bring forth, I cannot say, but certainly there will be a good deal of controversy about it. In the first place, 1 feel pretty sure that Pearce will not submit kindly to the proposal if it conies to a head,, and in a sense I do not blame him. The proposal itself is all right, and was no doubt put forward for the good of the sport, and for the purpose of ensuring, that of regaining the title, but is it quite fair at this stage to question Pearce’s right to the trip? Since May, 1909, wnen he won the championship from T'horoughgood, he has held it against allcomers, his victims after Thoroughgood being Mitchell, Day (twice), Hag ney, Webb (ex-world’s champion), and Syd. Kemp, and if no others have comforward since his last race that is not Pearce’s fault. There has been for some time past a good deal of talk about matching Fel on or someone els against the Australian champion, but it has all ended in smoke.”
