A MONTENEGRIN SUCCESS. London, October 10. Montenegrins captured Berano, taking 769 prisoners and 14 guns. OUR IDLE NATIVE LANDS. (Per Press Association.) Wairoa, October 17. A petition is being promoted by the County Council for presentation- to. the Minister of Lands asking him to take a block of native land at Tutaekuri for close settlement. The block comprises 12,512 acres, of which 12 per cent, is ploughablo and the rqst good hilly grazing land. It is situate in Waikaremoami riding, two miles from Frasertown. A European had a lease for 21 years and shore 16,066 sheep off the block, though' ho never did burn off more than fern, not even solving grass; now it grazes about 15 sheep, and is fast becoming a refuge for posts. The petition is being largely signed. ACCIDENT ON PUBLIC WORKS. (Per Press Association.) Whan garoi, October 17. John Neratich, an Austrian aged 29 years, was putting trucks into the ballast pit at the Public Works at Otira, when ho had .his leg run over by the truck and badly fractured. He was taken to Kawakawa, where the log was amputated, and is being brought to Whnngarei Hospital. He is making satisfactory progress. INTESTATE ESTATES. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, October 17. The Appeal Court to-day is hearing an appeal in re Dickens, deceased, in which is raised the right of the Public Trustee to administer in all cases 1 where a person dies intestate, whether there are next of kin in New Zealand ( who wish to apply or not. In this case . the wife of deceased, who was an en- • ginedriver at ■ Pet-one, applied for administration. The Public Trustee ■ claimed that under the law he! has the , right to act unless the Court thinks ( fit to-grant administration to any other, person who applies. The- section of the Act njidcr which the claim is made has always, been considered to ; impose this duty on the Public Trnstee in order rip protect relatives. The ' case comes before-the) Court-' -by, -ar- 1 rangernent, Sir John Findlay, K.C., and Mr. MacDonald for the Public ■ Trustee, and Messrs. THE EARTHQUAKE AT WAIROA. (Per Press Association.) Wairoa, October 17. A prolonged double-shock of earthquake at 3.30 yesterday, the direction being from south to north, was so severe that people ran out into the street. THE GAMING ACT. (Per Press Association.) LIQUOR IN AWAKING.
(Per Press Association.) w New Plymouth, October 17. In the S.M. Court to-day Frederick Carrington and A. J. Morton were each fined £lO and costs £ll 8s Id for keeping liquor for sale at Awakino, which is a prohibited district.
