Crushing operations have been completed on Ohura Road, and the plant moved to Manganui crushing site, where the supply for the eastern portion of North Riding is being crushed out. The stone supply from Waipuku for remetalling of portion of North Mountain Road is being steadily kept up. Applications for a man to work the road grader were invited in a Wellington paper. The survey of the Manaia Road cottage site is completed and the plan in hand. The arch of the Waipuku bridge is perfectly sound and the contractor has been instructed to put plaster in the cut made and the final payment will then be made. The West Riding stone contracts are in progress, Mr Hart having just commenced, and Mr Green having got out most of the Kapuni and Kaupokonui supply and having made a start at the western boundary. The timber for the Manganui bridge, Mountain Road, for redecking the bridge is coming to hand, and will be built in as soon as it all arrives. Foremen’s Reports. North Riding (West). —During the month the following work has been cariried out; The Upper and Lower Pem- ; broke Roads have been patched, and : a man put on to rake in the Cardiff i Road. The Mountain, Radnor, and ; Rutland Roads have also had repairs made to them. The York and Monmouth Roads require attention and will be proceeded with at once. The obtaining of boulders from Waipuku stream has been pushed ahead as fast as the unfavourable weather will permit of, and about half the amount required on Mountain Road has been got out. It would be advisable to obtain that required for Rutland Road from this source. As you are aware, I was laid up for two weeks during the month, but am now fairly right again. North Riding (East). —During the month general patching and repair work has been done on the various
roads under my control. About 800 cubic yards of boulders are out at Manganui site and over 100 cubic yards crushed and delivered. I will deliver all the maintenance metal on the various roads before commencing the remetalling on Beaconsfield Hoad. South Hiding.—All the roads are in fair order. I have remetalled 12 chains on the Finnerty Hoad. East Riding (Toko).—The crushing and remetalling on Ohura Hoad has been completed. Twenty cubic yards of metal from Sentry Hill were used in patching Skinner Road. The work of repairs to the roads under my control is now being taken in hand. East Riding (Douglas).—All the roads under my care are in very fair order. The Gordon Road broke up badly during the month, causing a lot of patching. We have been doing general road work on Ohura Road and have remetalled two chains ,of Douglas Road. East Riding (Huiroa). —During the month general repairs have been carried out on Akama, Makura, Mohakau and Douglas Roads, and the gorse cut at Waitara River. This will be burnt as soon as it is dry enough. Mr Ford has commenced cleaning the drain at the mill. The roads are in good order, considering the bad weather experienced.
West Riding.—A small washout occurred on. Brookes Road, but has been repaired. The Brecon Road broke up badly during the month, but has been put into fair order with thirty cubic yards of shingle obtained from Patea. The other roads are in good order. I am now watertabling and trimming them up generally. Mangaehu Riding.-—During the month I have been most of my time clearing slips and cleaning out watertables on Mangaotuku, Mangaehu, Mangaehu South and Popuanui Roads. Owing to the recent bad weather the roads have slipped a good deal and got into bad order, and with the difficulty of getting help, it takes me all my time to keep some of them open. The Puniwhakau surfaceman has been clearing slips and watertables on the Brewer-Taihou, Puniwhakau and Mangaehu Roads.
