LONDON MARKETS. London, October 12. Wheat is firm but quiet; 39s 3d lias been paid for Australian parcels of October shipment afloat. HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. Wellington, October 14. The High Commissioner, reporting under date October 12th, states: — Butter.—The market , is very firm for best quality. Large stocks of butter of second class quality are in the cold store. Danish 131 s, Siberian 112 s, Australian 115 s, New Zealand (nominal) 1245. Cheese.—The market is quiet, with small business doing. Canadian (white) 64s 6d, coloured 65s 6d,
HEMP MARKET VALUES. —: lit A QUESTION OF OUTPUT. (Per Press dissociation.) Wellington, October 14. In order to ascertain the extent to which the reported drought in the Philippines would probably influence the hemp market, that is, if current values were likely to bo maintained, the Secretary of Agriculture, Industries, and Commerce, cabled to H.M. Consul at Manila to the following effect: “The sharp rise in prices of hemp in London is said to bo due to decreased output in thePhilippines.Kindly cable the causes, and whether it is likely to continue.” To this the following reply has been received: “There is ifo shortage in-the arrivals of hemp here at present, but an eventual decrease of possibly 100,000 bales this year, owing to drought in the past spring, is anticipated provided ti'iie present demand continues.”
CANTERBURY PUBLISHING CO. —— o
(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, October 14. The prospectus of the Canterbury Publishing Company was issued today; It states that the main objects are to establish an independent evening paper in Christchurch. The promoters are Messrs I). D. McFarlane, AV. G. Jamieson, J. J. Dougall, J. J. Boyds, H. D. Acland, A. H. Turnbull, Dr Stevenson. Mr E. C. Hide is secretary to the company.
THE POSITION AT HUNTLY.
TRAINS AND WORKS CEASE. (For Press Association.) Auckland, October 14. It is reported from Hnntly thatowing to tho cessation of work at tho Taupiri Coal Company’s mine, four trains have been discontinued for want of freight. The brick and tile works closed down owing to the want of coal. An uneasy feeling exists among business people and residents generally. People arc leaving the town, dreading serious trouble.
