“MOKAU” JONES.
FURTHER EVIDENCE
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, October 9
Continuing his evidence before the Parliamentary Committee to-day, Mr Joshua Jones produced various doevu ments, including one purporting to show that in 1895 lie had an opportunity of selling the Mokau property in London for £200,000, but was prevented from doing so by a solicitor named Flower sotting up an adverse claim.
Mr Jones made certain reflections against the report of the Stout-Palmer Commission and was advised by Mr McCa,Hnm, a member of the committee, not to make remarks derogatory of Judges without undeniable support-
ing evidence. Mr Jones heatedly retorted that the report had been framed in ignorance. He knew nothing of the inquiry until two months after the presentation of the report.
Further protests were entered against Mr Jones being allowed to suggest corruption in the Judiciary, and Mr McCallum said: “I don’t think Sir Robert Stout is eycn capable of thinking corruptly, much less acting corruptly.” The Chairman said the committee should distinguish between a personal attack on a Judge and criticism of public acts of a Judge. He would not be prepared to hold that public actions of a Judge were beyond attack or criticism. Ho had heard nothing of a personal attaqk on Sir Robert Stout.
Mr Jones then continued his case, dealing with the transfer of property to Mr Herman Lewis. He declared Mr Lewis paid nothing for his interest in the property 7. The transfer was purely one of arrangement.
