Not even the rubber forests of the Congo or of Peru have witnessed such atrocities as those of which the Nicaraguan town of Granda is declared to nave lately been the scene. According to reports received by the State Department in Washington the rebels are now turning upon noncombatants and women and children, their treatment of whonj is described as absolute barbarism. It is believed that Nicaraguan affairs will before long call for European attention. The British ConsulGeneral in Managua has reported that two Britishers have been murdered by tiie rebels at Achuapa, but it is expected that the British Government will await the result of the American campaign before taking action.
