FLAXMILL WORKERS PROTEST. (Per Press association.) Palmerston N ( ., October 8. The Manawatu flax workers, at a meeting of the executive, passed the following resolution:—“That the executive of this Union .again records its protest against the gaoling of fellowworkers at Waihi, and on a day to be arranged will ask members to ceasework for 2-1 hours as a practical demonstration of sympathy with the strikers now in Mount Eden gaol, and as a protest against the action of a biassed Government in asking them to find sureties, with the alternative of gaol, on a flimsy charge; the executive is of the opinion that it is only another attempt to kill industrial unionism and curb industrial freedom, for which we fought for so long.” SOLICITING SDESCRIPTIONS. At the Thames Magistrate’s Court a man employed in the New Sylvia mine, was charged with using obscene language. Evidence was given to the effect that accused bad been in the habit' of presenting a subscription list to other miners and soliciting subscriptions in aid of tho Waihi strikers’ fund. One of the workmen, Thomas Black, a carpenter, refused to subscribe. On being asked for his reason, be explained that be was not in favour of the strike, and considered that the men should go to work, whereupon accused used the language complained of. Accused, who was defended by Mr Clendon, gave a general denial to tho charge. After hearing the evidence, Ills Worship stated that he was satisfied the language complained of had been used, and inflicted a fine of £3 and costs. *
