DOMINION DAY. (Per Press Association.) Christcliurch, September 23. Dominion Day was received with a quiet celebration to-day. The banks, Government offices and otner offices., and also the schools wereclo;ed. Otherwise the ordinary activities of the city were pursued. FLOODS ON THE MATATJKA. Gore, September 23. Heavy rain started on Satiuday at mid-day and continued almost continuously for 36 hours. The- Mataura river and district streams overflowed their banks and spread out over a large area of low-lying country. At Mandeville the Waimea stream spreed over a mile of country. As a result a number of sheep were drowned. The Waikaka and Mimihau streams arc in flood. Parts of Wyndham .'are flooded, several houses being ;• urrounded by water. The waters are now re--ceding. The rain will delay farming operations and also be injurious, to the lambing season.
WELLINGTON EARLY SETTLERS.! Wellington, September'23.'" ! The Wellington Early Settlers and Historical Association held its first annual re-union to-night. There was a large attendance. Speeches were delivered by the Governor, the ■ Prime Minister, the Mayor and others. BOOMING WANGANTJI. Wanganui, Sptember 23, The visiting Parliamentarians were taken to Castlecliff this morning, and shown the harbour works. They were very favourably impressed as to the prospects of a complete scheme. For months past a depth of 22 feet has been maintained. This is exactly as predicted by Mr Leslie Reynolds, though 'the cost has been under' hi 3 estimate. The Harbour Board, therefore, feel justified in asking for a loan of £250,000 to complete the scheme, which Avill give between 32 and 33 feet on the bar. This afternoon the party Were driven to Nukumaru and inspected the huge area of magnificent country lying .between there and Wanganui. To-night a farewell smoke concert was held, and the visitors left at 11.30 by special train for Wellington. THE TRADE COMMISSION. Christchurch, September 23. A meeting of local business men, convened by the Lyttelton Harbour Board and the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, was held this afternoon to consider the question of local evidence to be given before the Empire Trade Commission, when that body reaches Christchurch, It. was decided that "committees be appointed representing the agricultural and pastoral industries, trade and commerce, to make enquiries and supply information with reference to their respective departments, to be forwarded to the Dominion's Royal Commissioner, through the Minister of Internal Affairs; also to recommend experts to give evidence before the Commissioners when the Commission is being held in Zealand."
