Two men named Eslen and Downey were drowned, while crossing a flooded creek at Tara loon through a buggy capsizing. RAINFALL UNPRECEDENTED. LOSS OF LIFE AND PROPERTY. Received 9.40 a.m.) Melbourne, September 17. Several days’ gales and deluges in Victoria have made a rise in the tributaries of the Murray. There is an unprecedented amount of water at Alexandra, being higher than in 1870. Bridges and livestock were swept away. The Goulbourn bridge on the upper Thornton collapsed just after a drover with several thousand sheep had crossed. The rain in this district was accompanied by terrific wind which tore down a brick kiln and trees, and unroofed houses. Thomas Quinlivan was drowned while crossing over the river. Six and a half inches of rain foil since Friday. The rise in the Mitta Mitta river was the highest for fifty years. Residents and stock are moving to places of safety'. Stockmen in tne Tallangatta wore caught without warning, and sustained heavy 7 losses.
