FOOTBALL.

On Thursday next Taranaki will meet Canterbury in a match on the local A. and P. Grounds. Up to the present time Canterbury have not boon able to score a victory over Taranaki, but they hope to score on this Ovcasion. Taranaki, to keep jnj> their sequence of wins, will no doubt put forth their best efforts, and a splendid contest should ensue. As this is the first important interprovincial match played in Stratford, it is hoped the local people and the inhabitants oi the surrounding districts will support the Rugby Union in its efforts to provide entertainment for all parts of the province.

On the arrival of the Canterbury team at Stratford on Monday evening, they will be welcomed by the Mayor, Mr W. P. Kirkwood, in the Borough Chambers. Rugby Union officials and others will be present. The members of the team will remain in Stratford until Friday, and it is intended that every hospitality shall be shown to them. If we are only favoured with fine weather, the visitors from the Plains of the South will have an -opportunity of seeing Taranaki’s famous dairying country under winter conditions. It is pretty certain that the match on Thursday will attract the b'ggest crowd yet seen on the Show Grounds at a football match.
