FATAL AFFRAY at NOUMEA.
A DISCHARGED CONVICT’S CRIME. FIGHTS TO THE DEATH. (Received 4, 10.5 a.in.) Sydney, Sept era her 4. The steamer Pacilique reports a sensational occurrence at , Noumea on August 18. A discharged convict named Franceschi, 68 years of age, being jealous of his wife, who is 45 years younger, quarrelled with her, and forbade her visiting her family. Ho struck her and threatened her life, and she fled. Her husband pursued her, and having fired a rifle at her, barricaded himself in a house. The police and military arrived, and a ;iege ensued. There was continuous firing on both sides, and a soldier who climbed tiro roof was shot dead. Finally, a fumigating pump was introduced'under the door, and Franceschi being unable to breathe, opened the door, when a'fusilade began. Franceschi was shot in eight places, but continued shooting. Ho was captured and removed to the hospital, where ho died shortly afterwards. Several military were wounded.
